Playing Rules Changes.
The following major playing rules changes were passed and will go into
effect beginning with the 2003-04 season:
- All boys' and girls' age classifications beginning with 10-and-
Under and younger will now be required to use a lightweight puck in
sanctioned play. The new blue lightweight pucks to be used weigh
between 4 and 4.5 ounces (the standard black pucks weigh between 5.5
and 6 ounces ).
- The previous delayed offsides rule that applied to an attacking
player preceding the puck into the zone was eliminated from the USA
Hockey Rulebook for all youth age classifications. The rule now simply
states if, at any time, an attacking players precedes the puck across
the blue line, there will be an immediate stoppage of play and an
ensuing faceoff.
The only team officials allowed behind the bench during a USA
Hockey-sanctioned game, not including eligible players or goaltenders,
are currently registered USA Hockey coaches.
- USA Hockey implemented a five-second hurry-up faceoff rule for all
age classifications to maintain the flow of the game and maximize ice
time.
