Calgary Flames Announce Women at Centre Ice Program

The Calgary Flames today launched the Women at Centre Ice Program, a community based, volunteer driven initiative aimed at celebrating women in hockey. The program features a series of four luncheons, sponsored by your eight Calgary Ford and Ford Lincoln dealers in cooperation with Ford Canada and are dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness of women in hockey and will be run and organized through the Women at Centre Ice Committee.

The Centre Ice Luncheon series is focused on encouraging women in sport and reinforces the Calgary Flames already strong commitment to the Calgary community, said Ken King, president and chief executive officer of the Calgary Flames.

Our committee of volunteers came together to recognize the large network of women who are involved and interested in hockey, added Michèle Stanners, Chairman of the Women at Centre Ice Committee.

Through our luncheons, we will be recognizing women who have made significant contributions to hockey. We will also use two dollars from every ticket to fund our Women at Centre Ice Scholarships, which will be used to assist women in pursuing their opportunity to play, coach or referee hockey. The organization, the first of its kind in the National Hockey League, will promote women in hockey though the Women at Centre Ice Scholarships, Women at Centre Ice Awards and the luncheon series.

The first Women at Centre Ice Luncheon, presented by ENMAX, will feature Shannon Miller, coach of Team Canada for seven years, winning the major competitions for six out of those seven and was the first female head coach to ever coach a women's Olympic hockey team anywhere in the world. The luncheon will be held at the Air Canada Centre in the Pengrowth Saddledome. Tickets are available through TicketMaster.

The NHL applauds the Calgary Flames organization and the community and corporate volunteers from Calgary on this progressive initiative and their dedication to the sport of hockey, said Gary Bettman, Commissioner of the National Hockey League. Founded in 2002, Women at Centre Ice strives to develop, promote and celebrate.
