HORNIBROOK Gets 100th Win As Houghton Field Hockey Coach

The Houghton College field hockey teams 5-1 win over Oswego on Tuesday not only kept the team undefeated on the season (5-0), it also was an historic accomplishment for head coach Donna Hornibrook.

Hornibrook, who already has the most coaching wins in the 32-year history of the program, became the first Houghton field hockey coach to reach the 100-win plateau. She now has a 100-37-4 record in just-under nine seasons at the helm.

This isnt a personal accomplishment. Its a reflection on the program. Weve been able to win a lot of games over the past few years. Im proud to be a part of that, said Hornibrook. It means so much to do it this year because the kids are playing so well as a unit.

Hornibrook has brought stability and consistency to a program that had gone through five coaches in the five seasons prior to her arrival. She has also established Houghton as one of the top small-college field hockey programs in the Northeast. Though the team had a down year in 2002 (8-10), Hornibrook takes consolation in a yearly schedule filled with the top teams in the NCAA Division II and III.

She has led Houghton to three 15-win seasons during her tenure. Her 1998 squad finished 15-1. In the process they knocked off NCAA Division II runners-up Lock Haven University, 4-2. During the 1997 season, when the team went 12-4-1, Hornibrook's Highlanders upended the two-time defending Division II national champion Bloomsburg University, 2-1. This season, they have already knocked off Division III power William Smith College.

Hornibrook, a native of Canada, began her coaching career at the helm of the New Brunswick provincial team, where she led the team to the Canada Games (an Olympic-type event) gold medal in 1989. She moved on to serve as head coach at her alma mater, the University of New Brunswick, where she had a 62-12-8 record in five seasons. During her tenure UNB never lost a conference game, while winning five conference championships, and twice going to the national championship game. Hornibrook won four conference coach of the year awards and was honored once as national coach of the year. She coached 20 All-Canadian players, 11 Canadian National team members, and one national player of the year.

Hornibrook had a stellar playing career at UNB, earning four all-conference and four All-Canada selections. As a sophomore at UNB, she was selected to be a member of the Canadian national team, for which she played for four years. While on the national team, Hornibrook played in a World Cup tournament as well as an Olympic qualifying event.
