Bulldogs Ink a Forward and Defenseman in Early Signing Period
The Ferris State University men’s ice hockey program has signed left wing Derek Nesbitt (Egmondville, Ontario) and
defenseman Skip Renauld (Regina, Saskatchewan) to national letters-of-intent to attend and play ice hockey at FSU, beginning in the 2001-
2002 academic year. The announcement was made by ninth-year Ferris State head coach Bob Daniels.
Both of these young men are great additions to the Bulldog Hockey Program both on and off the ice, said Daniels. Although we will lose
some talented players to graduation this season, I’m confident in time these two will step capably into their roles.
A 5-11, 165-pound forward, Nesbitt is currently in his second year as a member of the Mid-Western Ontario Junior B Hockey League’s
(MWHJL) Sarnia (Ontario) Steeplejack Bees. Nesbitt placed among the MWHJL’s top 10 scoring leaders last season with 67 points on 33 goals
and 34 assists.
Derek is a highly-skilled forward, stated Daniels. He possesses good overall offensive skills and will fit into the mold of our current forwards
with his dynamic skating speed and skill. With added strength, Derek could be an impact player at the collegiate level.
Renauld, a 5-11, 175-pound defenseman, is presently in his second season with the Fort McMurray (Alberta) Oil
Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). He has four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in 20 games with 98 penalty minutes this
season. Last season, Renauld helped lead the Oil Barons to their first-ever Royal Bank Cup and Canadian National Junior A Hockey
Championship while also capturing the Doyle Cup title.
Skip is a strong defenseman, who skates well and has a good shot, Daniels said. He will strengthen our blueline while also making an
impact on our power play and offensive attack.
Ferris State is currently 3-5-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) this season. The Bulldogs have six
seniors on the 2000-2001 roster – defensemen Jim Dube and Scott Lewis, forwards Rob Lightfoot, Jon Rogger and Kevin Swider along with
goaltender Vince Owen.
FSU finished the 1999-2000 season with a 21-16-2 overall record, which represented its best mark since 1990-91.
