Brahmas and Fort Worth ISD team up for Cool School Game

The Fort Worth Brahmas and Fort Worth ISD are teaming up to put on the first ever Fort Worth Brahmas Cool School game at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The Brahmas will host the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in a Central Hockey League regular season game. The Fort Worth ISD will bus fourth graders from over 75 schools out to the Convention Center for the morning game. Over 6,500 fourth grade students are expected to make the trip for the game.

Mike Moncrief, the Mayor of Fort Worth, and Dr. Patricia Linares, Deputy Superintendent of School Management and Instruction, Fort Worth ISD, will be on hand to welcome the students to the event and kick off the game. KXAS NBC 5 sports anchor Derek Castillo will be the master of ceremonies and public address announcer for the game.

This is the first time in the seven-year history of the Brahmas that they have scheduled a regular season game on a weekday morning and in coordination with a school field trip event. Several other CHL teams have held school day games in recent years, and the response to the games has been outstanding. The Cool School game is also believed to be the largest single field trip ever conducted by the Fort Worth ISD.

Between periods of the game, Brahmas players and staff, with the assistance of Fort Worth ISD teachers and administrators, will conduct hockey themed intermission activities based on Fort Worth ISD approved curriculum. During the first intermission, selected students at the game will participate in two science experiments designed to illustrate speed and the use of a hockey stick as a lever. In the second intermission, additional selected students will test for resting and active pulse rates by participating in an on ice fitness challenge.

The second period intermission will also include a Brahmas JPS Health Network Healthy Goals presentation featuring students and Brahmas players. The Fort Worth Brahmas Cool School Game has been made possible by the sponsorship of several Tarrant County area corporations. Carrier of North Texas, Integrated Construction, Lyness Construction, MacMillan McGraw Hill, SRA McGraw Hill, Metroplex Finishing, Tradesman, Walden Distributing, Morris McIntosh, Racetrac, Mrs. Bairds, Unifirst and KXAS NBC 5 are all presenting sponsors of the event and will collectively help underwrite the cost associated with transportation and tickets for the event.

Mike Barack, the Brahmas sixth-year general manager, is eagerly anticipating the Brahmas first ever Cool School game. Our Cool School event could possibly be the biggest single game event in the history of our franchise. The Convention Center is going to be packed with kids, and it’s going to be an outstanding experience for the students, teachers and administrators on hand for the event. The cooperation and support of the Fort Worth ISD has been invaluable in making this event possible and we can’t wait to make it happen. We are also very fortunate to have the support of a number of Tarrant County companies who have really stepped up and proved their commitment to the Brahmas and the Fort Worth ISD with their support, Barack stated.

On behalf of the Fort Worth ISD, Dr. Linares echoed Barack’s sentiments. We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting collaboration with the Fort Worth Brahmas, said Dr. Linares. The Cool School event is a great opportunity for the students in the Fort Worth ISD. Linares went on to say that she is enthused about the tie in of Fort Worth ISD curriculum to the game’s activities.

The event will allow thousands of Fort Worth ISD students to apply what they are learning in their math, science, and physical education classes to real world learning experiences, she said. Our curriculum staff has been very involved in the planning process of this game, and we hope students will find the event fun and challenging.
