Ballistic Hockey Rolls South Austin Youth
South Austin youth have gone ballistic with roller hockey. Playing four on four with no goalie and a small goal, the format allows all players to skate in a fast moving game officially known as ballistic hockey.
The games are all a part of the fun of the Dittmar Inline Roller Hockey League. A program of the Dittmar Recreation Center, 1009 Dittmar Rd., the four team league consists of 34 youth ages 12 - 15 from Bedichek, Bailey and Covington Middle Schools and Bowie High School. Practices are held Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. and games are played on Saturdays from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. The league runs from Jan 25th through March 8th and consists of six games plus a tournament.
Local activity sparked organizing the league. With the success of the Ice Bats and seeing the kids roller blade and play hockey in streets the program need was apparent, said Jason Hall, the Program Specialist at Dittmar who created the league.
Games are played in the covered basketball area at the center. A portable border forms the rink and allows the puck (ball) to stay in play and portable nets serve as goals. Dittmar provides everything for the activity but the skates. This includes shin and elbow pads, helmets, sticks, jerseys and officials for the games. The program was made possible by the Social Fabric Initiative funding approved by the Austin City Council.
