Small Colorado Company Hits Olympic Gold with Hockey Puck Design Packaging of Boxer Shorts

It's bottoms up for Silk Trails, a small manufacturer of stylish silk and cotton boxer shorts and other products designed for ski resorts and the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The company is experiencing strong sales for its Olympic-theme boxers packaged to look like hockey pucks and expects them to be among the Games best sellers.

The Aurora, Colorado based company has produced three adult silk boxers displaying Salt Lake 2002 symbols, as well as eight cotton shorts and three neckerchiefs. The Olympic line also includes two children's cotton boxers that feature Powder, Copper and Coal, the mascots for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The shorts currently are available in stores in Park City and Salt Lake City as well as some outlets outside Utah.

Silk Trails obtained the licensing rights to use Olympic symbols on its silk boxer shorts and scarves in 1999. Since then, the company has seen sales explode: up 300 percent in 2000 and 100 percent in 2001. According to Susan Summers, Director of Licensing for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, Silk Trails' clever ideas have made them a valuable licensee. They have very innovative designs and their products are great conversation pieces.

In addition, Silk Trails has extended its line of innovative boxers arrayed with trail maps of some of America's most famous ski resorts with the addition of the Keystone and Winter Park resorts. Christy Sports will carry the Keystone shorts, while the map of Winter Park ski trails will be available at the Winter Park Ski Resort. The product will sell for under $30.

Novelty underwear is quickly gaining in popularity as a great gift alternative to the traditional tee shirt or cap, according to Renee Himel, Silk Trails CEO. It's fun fashion that generates an immediate Oh Wow response when people see it for the first time, she said.
