Learn to Skate, Hockey Appreciation programs

Do you have a child who wants to learn how to ice skate, or to learn the basics of hockey skating while gaining an appreciation for the sport?

The West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the Learn to Skate and Hockey Appreciation programs at Riverside Skating Center.

The Learn to Skate Program introduces the basic skills of ice skating, using a variety of safe, fun techniques that build confidence and encourage participation at the recreational level. The program is designed for children who have never taken ice skating lessons or want to build on previously learned skills. Skills taught include balancing, stopping, one-foot gliding, playing games, the proper way to fall on the ice and stand up again, and skating forward and backward.

The Hockey Appreciation Program teaches the basics of hockey skating while building an appreciation for the sport. The program is designed for children who already possess fundamental skating skills and are comfortable on the ice. Skills taught include the hockey stop, proper hockey position, skating technique and basic conditioning drills. Teamwork and good sportsmanship are also encouraged. Due to the design and size of Riverside Skating Center, no pucks will be used. While pads are optional, gloves are required.
