Parents Bring High School Inline Hockey Online in Colorado
Frustrated with a lack of organized high school inline hockey opportunities for their children, a group of local parents have decided to make a power play of their own by organizing their own league.
The Colorado High School Inline Hockey Association a non-profit corporation will begin play for its inaugural season January 19, 2002. Currently 25 high schools from all over Colorado will be represented, with as many as 50 teams competing in five state-wide facilities for a championship cup to be awarded in Spring 2002.
Many parents have joined forces to help the association recruit teams and players from local high schools to participate in its league. Players will represent their school with uniforms made of their school colors and mascot insignia. CHSIHA Executive Director, Ed Delgado, says CHSIHA plans to support parents and volunteers by providing its own resources to develop high school inline hockey teams in suburban, rural and inner city communities. We've got to make the effort to bring inline hockey to the communities where access to the conventional ice hockey program is difficult. Inline hockey provides an excellent alternative. It is inexpensive and can be practiced on neighborhood streets.
The organization is staffed entirely by volunteer parents who wanted to give their high school students the same opportunities awarded student athletes in other sports. Inline hockey, played indoors on rollerblades, is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the United States, but as yet is not supported officially by the state high school sports organizing body known as CHSAA (Colorado High School Activities Association).
The organization has ambitious plans and a few new exciting ways to capitalize on the growing popularity of the sport. They will be awarding over 100 team trophies and achievement awards for their first season, including their own version of a famed Traveling State Cup for their Colorado State Championship Series to be held in a location to be announced later into the league season. The winning Varsity team will keep the State Trophy to hold until another team wins it from them.
One of the founding parents, Mike Gregory, says that The high school players are very
excited about the chance to play for a state title. This sport is growing by leaps and bounds now, but there is still very little organization. Which is very frustrating for the players and parents. We're going to change all that and turn inline hockey into a legitimate high school activity for these kids. There will be lots of excitement this coming year.
The primary inline hockey facilities across the state such as Denver's Bladium Sports Club, OD's Sports Crossing in Fort Collins, Roller Express in Thorton, and Colorado Springs' Soc 'N Roll, have joined CHSIHA to make this high school league and the Championship Series a memorable event in Colorado. These facilities have teams that represent Colorado high schools in Colorado Springs, Douglas County, Arapahoe County, City of Aurora, City and County of Denver, Arvada, Lakewood, Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, Westminster. They've been instrumental in helping make this state organization a reality.
One other new approach is taking inline hockey online. An extensive website has been created for the new league at www.chsiha.org. Their participants and parents will be able to track schedules and league statistics online. This technology allows the league to streamline it's administrative costs by communicating to members online, and also puts all the information and parental support needed only a click away.
Trends suggest inline hockey is only going to become more popular. CHSIHA's goal is to better manage this growth and create new enthusiasm and opportunities for the student athletes and parents building this sport at the state level.
