Guidelines set for adult behavior at youth hockey games

Massachusetts Youth Hockey, the Boston Bruins and the Massachusetts Alliance for the Promotion of Sportsmanship (MAPS) today announced a Parent Code of Conduct that the youth hockey league and players are asking adults to adhere to during the hockey season.

The Massachusetts Youth Hockey Association developed the code to promote fair play and respect among both adult fans and players participating in the youth hockey program and contains 16 specific guidelines that cover all areas of the game on and off the ice. Included among the code are requests that parents not yell, taunt or threaten violence at games, let the coaches do their job and keep rinks free of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

By developing this code of conduct, Massachusetts Youth Hockey is putting the responsibility back on the parents to be good sports, AG Reilly said. Youth athletes are trying to set an example of good sportsmanship out on the ice and on the playing fields and they expect the same of their parents. I commend the Boston Bruins and Massachusetts Youth Hockey for their dedication to this important issue.

Dan Esdale, president of Massachusetts Youth Hockey said, Graduates of Massachusetts Youth Hockey have received tens of millions of dollars in college scholarships. We intend to provide the players in our organization with a good healthy environment.

It's great to see Massachusetts hockey take the lead role on the important issue of parental conduct at youth sports, said Mike Sullivan, head coach of the Boston Bruins.

Peter Roby, director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University and co-chair of MAPS said, I would like to commend the leadership of the Massachusetts Youth Hockey Association for helping to bring this code of conduct about. This code will help foster a real positive environment where kids and families can come together to enjoy sports involvement.

The Massachusetts Alliance for the Promotion of Sportsmanship or MAPS is an unprecedented union of law enforcement, sports teams and academia, all with the common goal of furthering the values that are gained through healthy sportsmanship in athletic competition. The alliance was first conceived in 2001 by AG Reilly and then Suffolk County District Attorney Ralph Martin in response to a number of incidents involving sports-related violence. Since then, representatives from MAPS meet regularly to discuss initiatives that MAPS hopes to implement in the future.
